PALS for KIDS teaches these skills in a fun and practical way. This is a 6 week program for preschool children. It focuses on helping children to develop important social skills necessary for interacting with others, making friends and play. The children are taught constructive ways to solve problems that arise in social situations through stories acted out by puppets, video scenarios, probe questions, role-play activities and songs. Each session focuses on a particular skill. One skill builds on another so that the program allows the children to gradually progress to the more complex skills of social interaction which include:
Greeting others
Taking turns: talking and listening
Taking turns at play
Sharing
Asking for help
Identifying feelings
Empathy
Overcoming fear and anxiety
Managing frustration
Calming down and speaking up
If your child has difficulties with any of the following then he/she may benefit from participating in the PALS for KIDS program
Low activity level
Doesn't talk to other children a lot
Shy, timid or unassertive behaviour
Avoids or withdraws from social situations
Prefers to play or spend time alone
Doesn't participate a lot in games or activities
Doesn't stand up for him- or herself
Unresponsive to the social initiations of others
Aggressive
Not doing as asked
Stubbornness
Disruptive behaviour
Poor social skills
Difficulty making friends
Difficulty staying on task
