Ensuring that our children are ready to start Year 1 is an issue that all parents usually feel some degree of concern about.
School readiness is the attainment of a certain level of development in motor, cognitive, social and emotional skills. For instance doing puzzles, age appropriate play with other children, and self care skills.
Does your child have difficulty with school readiness skills such as:
Using scissors
Holding a pencil well
Colouring within the lines
Visually identifying same and different
Listening and following instructions
Controlling pencil direction
Starting and finishing a task on time
Playing with peers
Poor posture when seated or standing
Some ideas to help school readiness over the holidays are:
Hold a few coins and put them in the moneybox one at a time without dropping any
Peeling stamps off paper to stick on Christmas envelopes
Using different tongs/tweezers to pick up cottonwool balls to make a snowman
Tear pieces of crepe paper, roll into balls and stick onto paper to make a collage decoration
Wheelbarrow Walking
Sometimes there is an element of concern that a child could perhaps be delayed in the development of their school readiness skills and whether they are in fact ready to transition into Year 1. Occupational Therapy Neuro-Developmental Assessments can help to identify areas of concern and provide valuable information to help parents and teachers make the best possible decision for their child. Since the occupational therapists at Brainy Blocks have specialist training in neurodevelopment they are able to work with your preschool teacher to optimise your child's developmental progress.
